I knew I needed an escape and for me, travel was the ultimate respite. So with my backpack ready and with my swelling eagerness for adventure, I set off on a journey to Southern Leyte.

Southern Leyte may not be as popular as other tourist destinations in the Philippines. Unknown to many, however, it hosts fascinating tourist spots worthy of exploration. Take note. Many of these are off-beaten.

Tourist Spots in Southern Leyte Province

1. Limasawa Island

Limasawa Island is one of the tourist spots in Southern Leyte.

Limasawa is one of the recognized historical tourist spots in Southern Leyte. It is where the first Christian mass in Asia was held, sparking the growth of Christianity in the Philippines. But there is more to that. The island boasts of stunning beaches with rock formations where you can dive towards the turquoise waters of the sea. You can go snorkeling or swimming all day long with the locals and the marine species. The Island also hosts other interesting sites such as the National Shrine of the First Catholic Mass in the Philippines, and caves.

How to Reach Southern Leyte

If you’re coming from Manila, you can reach Southern Leyte by riding a plane via Tacloban. There are local airlines that operate from Manila to Tacloban – the gateway to Southern Leyte.  From Tacloban City, take an FX van or bus to Hinunangan – one of the towns in Southern Leyte. There are also buses from Pasay or Cubao that operate direct trips to Hinunangan.
